Situation

Since Restoration Hardware opened their doors for business in 1979, the company has grown into one of North America’s most admired upscale purveyors of luxury home and garden furnishings.

With a new CEO at the helm and a fresh sense of direction in 2007, Restoration Hardware tasked Character with creating a new identity that would elevate the brand and distinguish it from its competitors.

Strategy

Key to the project’s success was achieving strong brand differentiation in an already cluttered luxury retail space. The brand needed to stand out in every part of the shopping experience. An examination of their competition showed that all the retailers shared a very similar look. To differentiate Restoration Hardware Character considered every aspect of the brand, including messaging, photography, color palettes, typography, graphic treatments and layout compositions.
